  18.     This document is  a brief description  of Mini-Host project  and its
  19.     demonstration version. It  is intended to  help you in  installation
  20.     and evaluating  the demo  version as  well as  to better imagine the
  21.     project's concepts, features and perspectives.
  22.  
  23.     The  document  is  written  under  a  supposition that the reader is
  24.     familiar both with basics of Microsoft Windows graphical environment
  25.     and basics of electronic mail.
  26.  
  27.     We  strongly  recommend  you  to read this document before you start
  28.     the  installation   procedure.  It's   quite  small   but  all   the
  29.     significant information is concentrated here.

  49.     GENERAL

  52.     Mini-Host  is  an  integrated   software  package  for  E-mail   and
  53.     data  processing.  It  works   under  Microsoft  Windows   graphical
  54.     environment.
  55.  
  56.     Mini-Host  package   should  give   you  an   ability  to   have   a
  57.     convenient   networking   environment   under   Microsoft   Windows.
  58.     It  should  allow  you  either  to  organize  a quite powerful email
  59.     host  on  your  PC,  or  to  get  your  PC  integrated into external
  60.     network.  It  should  allow  you  to  keep  all  your  various  data
  61.     (messages,  conference  articles,  pictures,  documents  and   other
  62.     files)  in  the  same  database;  each  data  item  could  be easily
  63.     transferred  via  network  without  any  extra  efforts  of encoding
  64.     and packing.

  66.     The  demo  version  is  of  limited  part  of  the  entire  project.
  67.     It  includes  two  main  parts  of  Mini-Host package only: the mail
  68.     user  agent  (MUA)  -  Data  Manager,  and  the mail transport agent
  69.     (MTA) - WinUUCP Communications.
  70.  
  71.     Demo   contains   several   Windows   applications   that   are  not
  72.     self-demonstrating ones,  so you  may figure  their "real behavior".
  73.     Each part  of the  demo (MUA  and MTA)  can be  installed separately
  74.     (see the INSTALLATION section of this document).

  77.     INSTALLATION
  78.     ------------------------------------------------------------------

  80.     Software Requirements
  81.  
  82.         To  run  demonstration  version  of  Mini-Host,  you should have
  83.         Microsoft  Windows  3.0  or  later  installed  on your computer.
  84.         To  get  the  best  look  of  some interface elements you should
  85.         also  have  two  standard  Windows  fonts  installed - Helvetica
  86.         and Courier.
  87.  
  88.         Since  the  project  is  oriented  to  Windows  3.1  we strongly
  89.         recommend  to   run  demo   under  this   version  of   Windows.
  90.         The  behavior  of  demo  applications  under  MS Windows 3.0 may
  91.         cause some problems.

  94.     Hardware Requirements
  95.  
  96.         You should  have at  least about  1.6 Mb  of free  space on your
  97.         hard disk  to keep  demo system  files and  to create  a minimal
  98.         databases  during  evaluation.  We  recommend  to  use a PC with
  99.         4 Mb  of RAM  or more,  although the  applications can  run with
  100.         less memory.  As  for video, it would  be better to look  at the
  101.         demo with VGA or higher resolution.

  104.     Installation Procedure
  105.  
  106.         If you  have got  the demo  installation files  in the  archived
  107.         form  you  should  unpack  the  archive  either  into  1.44   Mb
  108.         diskette  or  into  separate  temporary  directory  on your hard
  109.         drive (e.g.  C:\TMP). Then  you should  launch Microsoft Windows
  110.         (if  you  are  running  MS   DOS)  and  start  the   INSTALL.EXE
  111.         application.

  113.         Just as the main windows appears, you have to choose
  114.  
  115.         Setup / Settings
  116.  
  117.         menu item and specify some parameters in a dialog box:
  118.  
  119.         INSTALL      - you  may  install  either entire demo,  or one of
  120.                        two  parts  (mail  user  agent  or mail transport
  121.                        agent) of product.
  122.  
  123.         DIRECTORIES
  124.  
  125.         Windows      - the  MS Windows  directory  on  your  machine (is
  126.                        determined  automatically)  where  initialization
  127.                        files are to be placed.
  128.  
  129.         Source       - directory     of   the   source   binaries    for
  130.                        installation      (should      be      determined
  131.                        automatically).
  132.  
  133.         Executables  - directory  where  all  the  demo executable files
  134.                        should be placed.
  135.  
  136.         Database     - directory  where  all  the  databases  should  be
  137.                        created.
  138.  
  139.         Mail         - directory  where  mail  system  files   (spooler,
  140.                        routes and aliases tables) should be placed.
  141.  
  142.         OPTIONS
  143.  
  144.         Install BWCC - demo  applications  uses  the  Borland's  Windows
  145.                        custom  control  DLL  (BWCC.DLL);  if you already
  146.                        have  this  library  installed  on  your  machine
  147.                        do not check on this option.
  148.  
  149.         Create Group - if  you  use  the  Program Manager  as a shell in
  150.                        your Windows graphical environment, you may check
  151.                        on  this  option  and  the  setup program creates
  152.                        special  application  group  for  Mini-Host  demo
  153.                        applications.
  154.  
  155.         Just  as  you  have  specified  all  the  required  settings you
  156.         may choose
  157.  
  158.             Setup / Go!
  159.  
  160.         menu item to start the actual installation.
  161.

  163.     DEMO EVALUATION
  164.     ------------------------------------------------------------------
  165.  
  166.     Here  we  would  like  to  suggest  you  the most effective scenario
  167.     of   demo   evaluation   (where   you   can   avoid  some  redundant
  168.     difficulties).
  169.  
  170.     Creating Database of Users
  171.  
  172.         Since the  Users Database  is empty  after the  installation the
  173.         first step is to  fill it by some  data. To do this  you have to
  174.         run  User  Server  application  and  register  one or more users
  175.         of the system.
  176.  
  177.         First,  you   should  register   one  human   user  to   be   an
  178.         administrator  of  the  system  (the  most  appropriate  name of
  179.         that user is "postmaster").
  180.  
  181.         NB! Take care of the first  human user - he should have  highest
  182.             access permission to be  able to maintain database  of users
  183.             in  the  future.  See  Q&A.TXT  file  for more details about
  184.             user registration procedure.
  185.  
  186.         If  you  wish  to  evaluate  MUA  part  of system (Data Manager)
  187.         you  have  to  register  one  or  more  additional  human  users
  188.         to be  able to  send at  least local  mail between  them. Do not
  189.         forget  to  specify  a  home  directory  for each user where all
  190.         the user-specific parameters should be kept.
  191.  
  192.         If  you  wish  to  evaluate  MTA  part  of  the system (WinUUCP)
  193.         you have  to register  at least  one UNIX  host (your  uplink or
  194.         boss  node)  in  the  Users  Database.  Pay  your  attention  to
  195.         difference   between   log-in   and   log-out   passwords    for
  196.         registered  UNIX  hosts:  the  former  are  for  those  hosts to
  197.         access your  machine, the  latter are  for you  to access  those
  198.         hosts when you call them.
  199.  
  200.         NB! If you are going to write test letters and to send them  you
  201.             must  specify  your  host's  main  attributes (name, domain,
  202.             etc.)  in  the  corresponding  section  of  WinUUCP's setup.
  203.             Otherwise,  all  your  outgoing  mail  will not have a valid
  204.             source address.
  205.  
  206.     Modem SetUp
  207.  
  208.         If  you  are  going  to  evaluate  MTA,  you should tune WinUUCP
  209.         to  work  with  your  modem  properly.  Primarily,  you  have to
  210.         specify  correct  COM  port  your  modem  is  attached  to,  and
  211.         modem-specific   commands   (use   documentation   supplied   to
  212.         your hardware).

  214.     Using WinUUCP as an External Mail Transport Agent
  215.  
  216.         Our  MTA  -  WinUUCP  application  -  can be used as an external
  217.         mail   transport   agent   for   several   famous  Windows-based
  218.         E-mail   packages.   There   is   WUSMAIL.EXE   application   to
  219.         be  an  entry  point  to  WinUUCP.  For  example,  see   CMM.SET
  220.         file  to  get  information  about   how  to  use  WinUUCP   with
  221.         Cinetic Mail Manager.

  223.     Mail Procesing
  224.  
  225.         Our  MUA  -  Data  Manager  -  allows  you to perform almost all
  226.         the   basic   mail   operations.    Also   it   provides    some
  227.         additional   features.   You   can   evaluate   the    following
  228.         operations and procedures in demo version:
  229.  
  230.           - creation,  modification and  support of  tree-like structure
  231.             of folders;
  232.  
  233.           - creation and  sending of new  mail; replying and  forwarding
  234.             of received mail;
  235.  
  236.           - mporting   of   messages  from  standard  mailboxes  on your
  237.             machine and vise versa;
  238.  
  239.           - encoding/decoding    of    mail   by   means   of   built-in
  240.             UUENCODE/UUDECODE converter;
  241.  
  242.           - simple searching operations in mail database;
  243.  
  244.           - creation and usage of simple Address Database;
  245.  
  246.           - usage of mail message templates and patterns;
  247.  
  248.           - etc.
  249.  
  250.         We  suppose   that  some   user  interface   details  of    Data
  251.         Manager  (and  maybe  even   overall  user  interface   concept)
  252.         are  quite  different  from  what   we  have  ever  seen   among
  253.         various   mail-related   software   products.   So   the  primer
  254.         interest   for   us   would   be   your   responses  about  user
  255.         interface  of  the  product.   This  would  affect  the   future
  256.         development of the entire project.

  258.  
  259.     CAUTIONS
  260.     ------------------------------------------------------------------
  261.  
  262.     The main limitations of the demo version of Mini-Host are:
  263.  
  264.         1)  WinUUCP   allows   you   to  transfer a  limited  number  of
  265.             messages per session.
  266.  
  267.         2)  WinUUCP does not contain any internal call scheduler.
  268.  
  269.         3)  WinUUCP does not allow to transfer squeezed mail.
  270.  
  271.         4)  Data  Manager   does   not   support   any   external   mail
  272.             transfer agent except WinUUCP.
  273.  
  274.         5)  Data  Manager  does  not  allow  to  store  files  (objects)
  275.             except ordinary mail messages.
  276.  
  277.         6)  Data  Manager  does  not  allow  to  handle   messages  that
  278.             have size larger than 32 Kb.
  279.  
  280.         7)  Data   Manger  does   not  fully   support   access   rights
  281.             distinguishing   between   users   of   the   system.   Also
  282.             it does not provide automatic mail confidentiality.
  283.  
  284.         8)  Data  Manager  does   not  have  any   additional   features
  285.             to ease netnews (electronic conferences) handling.
  286.  
  287.         9)  There   is  no  any   help  supplied  to  the   applications
  288.             (neither   on-line    nor   documentation)    except    this
  289.             document  and  Q&A.TXT  file.   However,  you  may  ask   us
  290.             directly  for  any  help  information  (see  CREDITS section
  291.             of this document).
  292.  
  293.     Data  Manager  is  not  fully  optimized  for  speed  (we  hope this
  294.     is  not  a  great  problem,  but  our main goal of demo distribution
  295.     is  to  get  responses  primarily  about  user  interface   concepts
  296.     used in Mini-Host).
  297.  
  298.     Data  Manager  still   may  contain  some   bugs,  so  we   do   not
  299.     guarantee  that  the  mail  database  created  by demo version would
  300.     not  be  corrupted  one  day.  There  is  some  special  utility  to
  301.     repair  corrupted  databases,  but  it  is  not  included  in   demo
  302.     package.

  304.     Some  troubles  may  occur  when  you  try to terminate applications
  305.     in  unappropriate  order.  The  best  sequence  is  to  launch  User
  306.     Server  first,  then  WinUUCP,  then  Data  Manager and to terminate
  307.     applications in the reverse order.
  308.  
  309.     Demonstration   package   has   not   a   perfect   defence  against
  310.     all  users'  mistakes.  So  some  non-trivial  user's  actions   may
  311.     cause the system to fail.
